Focus On: Health

Welcome to the LRO Health theme page. This page will help you find out more about Health issues affecting Lincolnshire’s diverse communities. It shows some of the key resources available on the LRO for addressing Health issues and their determinants.

What is Health?

Health is defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.  Promoting and protecting health is essential to human welfare and sustained economic and social development.

There are many ways to promote and sustain health, many of which lie outside the health sector. The circumstances in which people grow, live, work, and age strongly influence how people live and die.

Determinants such as income, education, housing, food, transport, and access to social networks, can all impact on health, and often in unequal ways. Addressing such health determinants, and their inequalities, improves health outcomes and reduces health inequalities within and between communities.

Enabling people to choose healthy lifestyles, and to access appropriate health services, also contribute to improved and less unequal population health outcomes.

Improving the public’s health and addressing health inequalities is everyone’s business. It involves the combined efforts of organisations and individuals. (Dept of Health 2010)

Understanding Health in Lincolnshire

There are various publications (report documents and datasets) available on the LRO outlining key Health and Wellbeing issues in Lincolnshire, and offering guidance for partners looking to address them. Click the More link below for examples.

Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA)

The Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA) sets out the five Health and Wellbeing overarching priorities for Lincolnshire, as follows.

  • Promote Healthy Lifestyles
  • Improve health and wellbeing for older people
  • Deliver high quality systematic care for major causes of health and disability
  • Improve health and reduce health inequalities for children
  • Reduce worklessness

Lincolnshire Public Health Annual Report

The Annual Report by the Joint Director of Public Health for Lincolnshire, outlines some of the main health issues and health inequalities within the county, and makes recommendations. Key elements from this report feed into the overarching JSNA Health and Wellbeing priorities.

Health Profiles for Lincolnshire and Districts

Health Profiles for Lincolnshire and for each of the Districts are available on the LRO website. The profiles are nationally-published and contain a set of what are seen as some key health indicators to provide an accessible snapshot of health conditions in an area. The profile indicators are comparable between areas and over time.

(To obtain Health Profiles, see the Reports links, above right)

Clinical Commissioning Group Profiles

The Clinical Commissioning Group Profiles are an evolving resource on the LRO website, and are intended in particular to help GP Practices and commissioners who may be looking for information about health conditions among their populations.
