Gaining Value from The 2007 Indices of Deprivation in Lincolnshire
Viewing requirements
The interactive map requires a web browser with Macromedia Flash plugin version 6 or above installed. This can be obtained free of charge from Macromedia.
How to use the Interactive Map
The image below shows the main screen from the toolkit, along with descriptions of the various functions.
Main map view
This displays the thematic map, and results when the mouse is moved over or clicked on a shaded area.
Moving around the map
Use the navigation controls to zoom in and out, and pan. Click on the "+" or "-" symbol to zoom, or the "N", "E", "S", "W" to pan the map in that direction.
Show features
By clicking on the "show towns" button, several of the major market towns will be displayed on the map. To remove them, click on the "clear labels" button. The "reset" button will zoom out and re-centre the map so that the whole county is visible.
Finding a place
To find a town or village on the map, simply type in the name as shown. As you type, the closest match will be automatically displayed on the map. The built in gazetteer contains over 1,600 locations.
Displaying map data
Click on the dropdown menu labelled "domain" and select the required domain; the map will then update.
Click on the dropdown menu labelled "filter" and select the desired option; the map will then update. The options here are for the top 10, 20 and 30 percent most deprived in England.
Click on the dropdown menu labelled "colours" and select the desired option; the map will then update.
Quick info
As you move the mouse over an area on the map, a box will appear showing the following information:
- Super Output Area code - this is the geography level that the data is released at;
- Parent Ward - the Ward in which the area is found;
- Parent District - the Local Authority in which the area is found;
- Overall Rank - the overall rank of deprivation for that area;
In addition to this, the chart will automatically display the ranks for all of the domains.
Detailed info
To obtain more details on an area, simply click on one. An info box will appear over the map showing the same data as described in "Quick info", with some additional figures for:
- Population - the total population for the area from the 2001 Census;
- Population density - how many persons per hectare from the 2001 Census;
- People over 65 - from the 2001 Census;
- People under 16 - from the 2001 Census;
Whilst this info box is displayed, the chart will be "frozen". By moving the mouse over the bars, the rank for each domain will be displayed.
